Kate Hudson – Lizard Island

Hollywood A-lister Kate Hudson has voted Lizard Island Resort on the Great Barrier Reef as "the most romantic place in the world" during an interview in the Sunday Mail to promote her latest flick Bride Wars.

“Lizard Island Resort on the Great Barrier Reef is the most romantic place in the world. It’s a honeymoon destination in the middle of nowhere. I shot Fool’s Gold there with Matthew McConaughey. There’s a small landing strip at the resort and you fly there on a little prop plane. It’s on a marine reserve where you see loads of potato cod – they’re huge with big lips and weird faces. It’s a fantastic place with amazing food and beaches, just ridiculously luxurious. If you’re into romantic beach holidays with beautiful sand and clear crystal-blue water, this is it – the ultimate.”

Hudson was at Lizard Island in 2006, filming Fools Gold with Matthew McConaughey, and Donald Sutherland. Kate Hudson rented 17 Wharf Street during her stay, and McConaughey celebrated his 37th birthday at the Iron Bar and the Courthouse Hotel in Macrossan Street Port Douglas.

During filming Port Douglas was transformed into Key West, the popular US tourist town at the southern most tip of Florida, and Lizard Island became a pristine Caribbean island.

Fool's Gold, is a part romantic comedy, part adventure film, with Hudson and McConaughey playing modern day treasure hunters searching the Caribbean's turquoise waters for 40 chests of priceless jewels lost almost 300 years ago.

Hollywood heavyweights Steven Speilberg and Tom Hanks spent 6 months in Port Douglas in 2007 while filming a new epic TV mini series on the Pacific war called appropriately The Pacific. One of the most expensive miniseries ever filmed which is due to be out in 2009. Hanks reputedly stayed at the Balé Villas during his stay in Port Douglas.

"Port Douglas was probably one of the most beautiful places I've ever been."
