Pangaimotu Island Resort

Pangaimotu Island is only a few minutes by boat from Nuku'alofa, the capital of the island of Tongatapu, the Kingdom of Tonga, in the South Pacific. The island is extremely popular with locals and with budget travellers. There are four beach fales (one double bed, one single) and an eight person dormitory. Pangaimotu has a delightfully rustic main fale overlooking one of the best swimming beaches in Tonga.

The main fale operates as Big Momma’s Yacht Club, and it’s a favourite haunt for yachties from all over the globe. Today is Sunday in Tonga, and they take Sunday here very, very seriously. So the whole of the main island is practically a ghost town. So the Palangis (foreigners) and even a lot of locals come here to relax and eat lunch on Sundays. This being coronation week the restaurant was packed with TV crews and journalists here to report the coronation. I spent the afternoon chatting with a producer from Tagata Pacificika in New Zealand, who turned out to be a direct descendant (on the Tongan side) from the castaway William Mariner.

The island can also organise day trips to surrounding islands and drop you off for your own Robinson Crusoe island experience at a beautiful uninhabited tropical island.
